Helios presents “Sweet Flames”

We invite you to an afternoon dedicated to love! The sixteenth and early seventeenth century were a time of ardent experimentation in setting passionate poetry to music. We’re excited to bring you a sumptuous exploration of this remarkable repertoire.

This concert is a new version of our “Sweet Flames” programme, which debuted at the Music Room last year. It features respectable English madrigals by composers such as Weelkes and Wilbye and the famous “Fair Phyllis” by Farmer; less respectable depictions of erotic love by French composers such as Lassus; beautiful songs of devotion in French and Italian by composers including Renaissance women Vittoria Aleotti and Maddalena Casulana; and favourites throughout the centuries from Pearsall, Debussy and Stan Rogers. Passion not only brings people together in the moment, but it also connects us throughout the ages as we experience the longing, bliss and loss of lovers from past centuries as if time did not exist between us.
